The idea for CompassPass didn’t start in a boardroom or as a grand business plan. It started out of sheer necessity back in 2013, right in the middle of my work with Naval Lodge No. 4.
Like many volunteer-led groups, we were running into a wall. There simply wasn’t a good, cohesive tool out there to manage the lifeblood of our organization: membership information, dues tracking, event notifications, and RSVPs. So, I decided to build one. I developed a website structure from the ground up to solve those exact problems, and I’m proud to say that same system is still powering naval-lodge.org today.
Over the years, as the needs of the lodge grew, the platform grew right alongside it. What began as a simple membership and event tool evolved into a comprehensive management engine. We expanded it to handle finance tracking, annual budgeting, dues collection, and even selling event tickets and merchandise via PayPal. We eventually added a digital kiosk setup for seamless, on-the-spot event sign-ins and attendance tracking.
The real turning point, however, came a few years later through my involvement with Scouting America.
Serving as Committee Chair for my kid’s Troop 993, it became obvious that their website (bsa993.org) and event registration system needed a major overhaul. They were completely lacking any integrated way to handle finances, collect dues, or manage a budget. The pain points were identical to what I had seen at the lodge. I introduced the troop to the same functionality I had built for Naval Lodge, and the impact was immediate. Shortly after, I brought the exact same toolkit over to my other kid’s pack, Pack 888 (pack888alexandria.org).
This journey leads directly to where I am today.
I created CompassPass because I know firsthand how much time leaders spend wrestling with spreadsheets and scattered tools when they’d rather be focusing on their actual mission. I built this system to give you your time back.
